Sisterlocks: Growing Pains

My sisterlocks are growing like CRAZY!

The first year, the shrinkage was real. So real that many people asked if I’d actually cut my hair.  It was hard to see much growth. During the second year, they started to plump up and slightly drop due to the locking of the hair. My third year is pure growth. They’re still thickening up, but they are noticeably longer.

Breakage Around the Crown

While my hair is denser than I originally thought, I’m slightly concerned about some of the locks around the crown of my head. Since installation, I’ve had a hard time growing out that area. The locks start growing well, but thin out over time and break. Thankfully, the breakage hasn’t been severe enough to cause alopecia, but I am concerned nonetheless. If new locks added to the crown area continue to break, I’ll have to either combine them to produce larger locks in that area, or let the hair grow freely (which is not clean, but is better than no hair at all) *side eye*.

Pineapple Pain at Night

My go-to style at bedtime is pineappling with an ouchless hair tie and a scarf wrapped around my head. Lately, however, I’ve noticed that I wake up with a lot of pressure, almost like a headache. The pressure all but disappears just minutes after I remove the pineapple. It took a while to realize what was happening. At first, I thought I wasn’t getting enough sleep, but after the pressure subsided without taking pain meds, I began to piece it together.

Gone are the days of pineappling and going to bed. As my locks continue to grow, I have to find another bedtime option that allows me to wear my hair down, but still protected.

Top Buns During the Day

I’ve also had to modify my top buns during the day. I can no longer pull all of my hair up on the top of my head. Some of it must be left down to prevent pressure.

Funny, I figured I’d have these issues once my hair reached waist length, not almost-bra-strap-length.
