Sisterlocks: 8 months and an updo

An update

My sisterlocks are 8 months old! It’s hard to believe eight months have gone by since my install in April. While most of my ends are still free and coiled, some of my locs are actually starting to loc! Woo hoo!

A couple of locs still unravel around my crown, but I’ve decided not to give up working out, so I’ve just accepted that it’s going to take longer for those areas to settle and loc.

I can also see growth. Interestingly enough, my hair is not all that much longer. If you figure that, on average, hair grows about .5 inches a month that would mean I should have about 4 inches of new growth. I don’t have that much growth, however, as my hair continues to loc, I’m noticing a bit less shrinkage overall so I’m able to see more of my actual length.

A new ‘Do

On my way to church and I wanted a new hairstyle. Even before sisterlocks, I’d always wanted to french braid my hair into an updo, but I never tried it. Well, rather than tackling the awkward positioning of my hands for braiding, I started flat-twisting my hair with no real goal in mind. (Disclaimer: I am not a beautician, so a lot of my new “masterpieces” occur from pure luck. Haha)  After a couple of rounds, I stopped twisting and grabbed a mirror to check my progress and thought, “why not make a swirl to help with the effect?” So, I did. I wrapped the twist all the way around to the front left side of my head and secured it using 3 bobby pins with cowrie shells attached. I flared a few of the locs to add some height and that was it.

I think it looks pretty good for my first-ever attempt at an updo! #Winning. I’m bummed though because I was a bit heavy handed and had to take it down before the end of the night. I’ll keep playing and trying now that I’ve got the feel of it though.

I’m not really set up to take YouTube videos, so the tutorial (for anyone who might be interested) will have to come at a later date.
