My New Sisterlocks Yoga Workout Style

One day, I was watching TV and playing around with my hair and started flat twisting my sisterlocks. My 9 year old walks in the room and says, “Uh, you did something to your hair…” I said, “Yea. Just playing around. Why?” “Because it looks weird,” he says. Well, there goes that experiment.

So, my flat twists are not yet ready for prime time wear, but they achieved two things: First, they kept my hands outta my hair. I have a bad tendency to play in my hair when it’s loose. I know. Shame on me, but I love the texture.

Flat Twists on sisterlocksSecond, it’s the perfect workout style. I had to stop wearing the thick workout headbands because they trapped in the moisture and caused slippage around my hairline.  Earlier this week, I was laying down at the yoga studio,  just before class started. I was about to put my sisterlocks in a bun, but instead, I quickly put in two big flat twists and tied it with an ouchless band. After an hour of sweating profusely in the power vinyasa class, my hair was still secure in the flat twists. It was wet, but secure. I left it twisted while I drove back to work and showered. When I took them down though…my hair looked GREAT! Sure it smelled like sweat, but a few sprays of witch hazel and essential oil would tackle that. I literally shook my hair, fluffed in a couple of spots, and went about my merry way. Gone are the days of coming to work with a banging twist out, only to resort to a ponytail after yoga class. Heyy!

At night, I occasionally put my hair in 2-3 flat twists, cover with my scarf, and wake up to gorgeous curls. I’ve found I get the best results on those nights when I clean with witch hazel and follow up with oil just before twisting. I’ll post pics on that soon.
