Making the Decision to Get Sisterlocks

To Lock or Not To Lock

No-heat blow out

So, I’ve been flip flopping for a while about getting sisterlocks. I’ve been natural for almost 20 years, but I’ve never had locks before. I have several hair crushes with color and texture to die for, but I’ve been afraid of (1) the cost and monthly commitment, and (2) the permanence of the style. I am constantly in my hair, which is probably why I don’t see as much growth as possible. But I love switching up my look. Whether it’s two-strand twists, a twist-out, an up-do, braids, or a simple afro, you never know what it’s going to look like from week to week.

Working Out While Natural

Natural UpdoMy biggest issue these days with my current hair is that it’s hard to workout. After an hour of hot yoga, my afro becomes a TWA (teeny weeny afro) unless I twist it prior to the class and pull it up into a tight ponytail. I usually workout at lunch, so sometimes I go back to work looking a hot mess…but I’m at peace. Namaste. 🙂

I’ve recently started running as well. After a good 1-hour run, my hair is sweaty and plastered to my face. It would be LOVELY to wash my hair in the shower at work, but clearly that’s not happening. At this point in my life, it’s just not convenient to wear my hair like I do and workout 3-4 times a week. So, I’m going to do it. I’m getting sisterlocks.

Delusions of Grandeur

I don’t have delusions of grandeur. I know that sisterlocks require maintenance and regular care. I don’t expect to just run around fancy free and footloose. I also realize that having sisterlocks won’t stop me from switching up my ‘do regularly either.

I’m ready for the next phase in my natural hair journey. My two-day installation is set for April 27 & 28.
