Then: May 2016

Back in May of 2016, I posted about my bald spot due to a flare up of discoid lupus. While the hair loss appeared to have happened overnight, I actually started noticing it back in March of that year.
Turns out, that was actually my 2nd lupus-related bald spot. The first occurred back in 2011. That’s when I initially found out that I had the condition. The 2011 bald spot was half the size however, and ended up going away after a couple of months with medication.
Naturally, I thought the 2016 bald spot would go away on its own, but when the spot continued to slowly grow in diameter, I was terrified that the hair loss would be permanent so, with tears in my eyes, I set an appointment with my dermatologist. I lost about 5 or 6 locs, which I keep in a baggie for my loctician to reattach when the hair is strong enough to hold them.
Now: February 2017

Almost a year, lupus meds, and 3 cortisone shots later, my hair is growing back. Praise God! It’s about 1 inch long at this point. The texture started off baby fine, but has started to curl up a bit. I’m not sure if the texture will continue to curl to match the rest of my head, but I’m definitely not complaining.
Going Forward
I pray this is the last time I have to deal with a bald spot, but regardless, I take precautions when I’m out in the sun as I’ve started to notice that my lupus tends to flare up in the Spring and Summer months. It’s also when I make sure to take my meds since I don’t take them daily otherwise. All in all, I’m grateful. Deuces.
