So I was too cute in my military hat the other day. (Think Janet Jackson in Rhythm Nation) I wore the black fully lined hat to my choreography rehearsal to keep me from playing in my hair. So I sang and danced in it for 3 hours. Needless to say, I sweat a lot underneath the hat. Already not a good sign.
It’s okay to sweat, just don’t cover it up
Mind you, I do hot yoga and martial arts a couple of times a week. Both of which cause an enormous amount of sweating in my head. But I stopped wearing headbands and scarves a few months ago when the locs around the crown of my head kept unraveling. I hadn’t had a case of slippage like that ever since.
Back in August, I wondered if it was possible to work out consistently and not have slippage. Well, up until this week, I proved it was possible. As long as I allow the sweat to run freely (without a headband, HAT, or scarf), I’m good. I simply towel dry my face and pat my hair.
Another one down and another one down…

I guess I thought I’d be okay since I’m 5 months in the loc’ed game. 3 hours of minor head sweat shouldn’t cause any harm, right? That couldn’t be further from the truth. In total, I think 4 locs slipped from that one three-hour rehearsal. (sigh) I was a little surprised and very disappointed when I prepared my head for bed that night. Several of my crown-area locs had begun to unravel! In the photo, the hair shown used to be at least two, new baby locs that had withstood several sessions of 98-degree hot yoga. Yet, here they are chillin’…totally unraveled. Oh well. I hope my experiences help someone else. My reti is in two weeks.
Note to self: No hats or scarves of any kind that will cause me to sweat in my hair — at least not until I’m fully loc’ed.
[…] it. But now that I have sisterlocks, things are different. After my last issue with slippage after wearing a hat for 3 hours, I didn’t want to risk the amount of damage I would cause from 3 weeks of wearing a wig. […]
